Guns & Gambling: Sanders and McKenzie Tear Into Clarity Act

In the fluorescent gloom of Capitol Hill, where ideas go to be embalmed in jargon, a mismatched patrol has formed to call out the newest digital hustle. Senator Bernie Sanders, the gravel-voiced ideologue who has spent decades growling at Wall Street suits, teams up with Ben McKenzie, the former teen-drama star who now stalks blockchain with the intensity of a man who once saw a spreadsheet and never recovered. Their quarry: the CLARITY Act.

The bill presents itself as sober adult supervision for digital tokens. In practice it performs a bureaucratic magic trick. Oversight of many of these speculative assets slides from the Securities and Exchange Commission, the agency built like a brick wall, into the lap of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a leaner outfit with fewer bodies and a softer grip. It is the legislative version of swapping a seasoned customs officer for a temporary intern holding a clipboard and a hopeful expression.

The visual absurdity is almost artistic. We are told to treat digital tokens that produce no cash flow, no products, and no tangible value as serious economic machinery. Green arrows flash on screens while the actual dollars march uphill in formation toward exchanges, token creators, and the early circle that understood the script from day one. Everyday buyers chase vapor charts. The architects cash the receipts.

Political cash floods the scene like a broken fire hydrant. Crypto-aligned committees have dumped roughly $189 million into the current election cycle, buying smiles and silencing questions with impressive efficiency. The debate starts looking less like governance and more like a quiet auction of future rules. The bill itself arrives without the basic ethics language that would stop lawmakers from holding personal skin in the assets they are about to green-light.

Sanders and McKenzie are simply holding up a mirror. Congress is not drafting the architecture of tomorrow’s finance. It is rolling out a red carpet for an industry that has perfected the art of turning pure narrative into permanent influence. The emperor is not merely naked. He is waving from a parade float made of unbacked tokens while the crowd cheers the empty spectacle.
