The United States Mint just rolled out its latest limited-edition history product, and this one arrives carrying more backstory than most of the coins in its own vault. The Best of the Mint 1804 Silver Dollar Gold Coin and Silver Medal Set is live. One full troy ounce of 99.99 percent gold, high relief, the original raised-lettered edge still declaring HUNDRED CENTS ONE DOLLAR OR UNIT, plus a Liberty Bell 250 privy mark sitting there like a birthday sticker on an antique. The matching one-ounce silver medal offers a smoother modern remix. Total production: 15,000 sets. Half the earlier runs.

The original 1804 dollar is the ultimate numismatic ghost. Zero coins dated 1804 were struck in 1804. The first ones appeared in 1834 as diplomatic gifts for foreign rulers. Sixteen examples are known. Now the Mint has finally given that design a modern body for the first time. Previous Best of the Mint releases recycled the Mercury Dime, Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty designs that had already been done. This one had not. That alone puts a different kind of posture on the piece.

Sales figures on the earlier sets form their own awkward group portrait. The Mercury Dime version is basically gone at 29,265 of its 30,000 limit. Standing Liberty sits at 16,266. Walking Liberty, only weeks old, has moved 9,440. So the Mint cut the mintage in half for the 1804 set and raised the price. Collectors who chase prestige will feel the scarcity. Everyone else will feel the receipt.

The 1804 dollar’s strange origin story does most of the heavy lifting. Whether collectors clear the shelves the way they did for the Mercury Dime is still an open question. The Walking Liberty numbers already suggest the market is sorting its favorites.
