Texas and Florida Launch Metal-Backed Digital Currency

Not financial advice. For satirical purposes only.

Picture the dollar sweating through its cheap polyester suit while two sun-baked states quietly hand out a metal alternative like it’s no big deal. On September 1, Texas starts treating gold and silver as legal tender under HB 1056. Florida’s version already slithered into effect last month. No one is minting shiny disks with a governor’s grin plastered on them. No one is setting fire to the Federal Reserve. They are just welding together electronic pipes so a regular person can stash real metal, flash a card, and settle a tab in something Washington cannot print while half-asleep.

Texas is the bigger, sweatier operator. Its comptroller has to bolt together a system backed by bullion already locked inside the Texas Bullion Depository. Legal recognition starts next week; the full transactional machinery is supposed to cough to life by May 2027. Florida went the private-custodian route—licensed outfits holding allocated, audited, insured metal, moved electronically instead of sliding bars across a counter like leftover lunch. Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Utah have their own versions. Those six states together generate more economic horsepower than Germany or Japan. This is not a coin-collector’s fever dream. It is the first serious modern attempt to give people a usable exit from pure fiat.

The timing is almost too on-the-nose. The national debt just staggered past $40 trillion like a guy who refused to leave the all-you-can-eat buffet. Interest alone is stampeding toward a trillion dollars this fiscal year—bigger than the defense budget and growing faster than anything else on the books. Gold is trading near $4,650 an ounce, up roughly 38 percent in a year after a manic swing that saw it brush $5,500. Foreign central banks have been quietly vacuuming up a thousand tonnes a year while trimming Treasuries. China’s U.S. debt pile sits at its lowest since 2008. The professionals already voted with their vaults. Until now, regular Americans who wanted the same option faced sales taxes, storage fees, insurance, and a 28 percent federal collectibles tax if they ever tried to spend the stuff. Florida and Texas just kicked most of that friction into the gutter.

Hayek called this shot in 1976. Monopoly money is bad money; competition forces better behavior. Congress half-agreed this year by chartering private stablecoins while blocking a retail central-bank digital dollar. The punchline: every approved stablecoin is still chained to the dollar and stuffed with Treasuries. You get a choice of brands, not a choice of value. Gold and silver are the only entrants running on a different anchor. That is why the state experiments matter more than their early adoption numbers will show.

The founders left exactly one door open in Article I, Section 10: states may recognize gold and silver coin as tender. Texas and Florida walked through it with mud still on their boots. No one is forced to use the metal. Merchants can still demand greenbacks. Federal tax rules have not changed. Gold can still lurch up and down like a drunk on a trampoline. What it offers is not six-month stability. It is independence from a single issuer’s decisions over decades.

Money does not need mass adoption to discipline the monopoly. It only needs a credible exit. Beginning next week, in two of the country’s largest economies, that exit exists. Whether ten thousand people use it or ten million, the people printing the dollars now face a public that finally has somewhere else to go.
